Waseeya – A tool for the mindful Muslim

Mindfulness is a tool that people are using more each day in the professional world. Thasha Aly explores how Waseeya can be used to achieve our own personal mindfulness.

Mindfulness – how much time do you make for it in your everyday routine? It’s a concept that focuses the mind and body on the here and now. But that’s pretty difficult to do when the here and now is in such disarray that it feels neither here, nor now. Maybe Waseeya can help…

The practice of mindfulness is at the very heart of so many religious philosophies and yet it has only taken centre stage in the corporate world fairly recently. As the secular sector begins to see the tangible effect that mindfulness has on the productivity of employees, at Waseeya, its started to make us think – how can we use mindfulness to achieve our own personal goals?

As a company that caters for Muslim wills as well as standard wills, both of which are fully enforceable under UK law – we like to think about things through the Muslim lens as well. So, what does mindfulness mean in traditional Islamic thought? Well, it has its very own term in Arabic – muraqabah

Traditionally, mindfulness is being able to focus on the present moment in time, without being distracted by any intrusive thoughts or feelings. In an Islamic context, muraqabah (from the root meaning ‘to watch, or carefully consider’), means the mental, emotional, and above all the spiritual wellbeing. It’s a sincere belief that Allah watches over all of a believer’s actions and thoughts. Muraqabah is mentioned in Surah Yunus:

{Whatever you may be doing, and whatever portion you may be reciting from the Quran, and whatever deed you (mankind) may be doing (good or evil), We are Witness thereof, when you are doing it. And nothing is hidden from Allah (SWT) the weight of an atom (or small ant) on the Earth or in the heaven. Not what is less than that or what is greater than that but is (written) in a Clear Record.}

So, how do we put this mindfulness into place when sorting out our daily affairs? Well, they say that a tidy space gives you a tidy mind.
